Dutch State Visit to Ireland

King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima of The Netherlands are on a State Visit to Ireland, at the invitation of President Michael D. Higgins and at the request of the Dutch Government, from June 12-14 to strengthen political, economic and cultural ties between the two countries.

In the morning, King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima were welcomed by President Michael D. Higgins and First Lady Sabina Higgins at Áras an Uachtaráin, the president’s official residence in Dublin, followed by a private audience, tree planting in the Irish tradition, following which, the King placed a wreath at the Garden of Remembrance, in memory of those who gave their lives in the Irish Freedom Fight.

In the afternoon, the King and Queen met with the Presidents of the House of Representatives (Dáil) and the Senate (Seanad) at Leinster House, followed by a visit to Dogpatch Labs, a start-up hub in heart of Dublin’s ‘Silicon Docks’.

In the evening, President Michael D. Higgins and First Lady Sabina Higgins hosted a State Banquet in honour of King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima (wearing a Jan Taminiau gown with the Emerald Tiara) at Áras an Uachtaráin. Both the King and President gave speeches.12

  1. Lovely photos of everyone, especially Queen Maxima! Her tiara is serviceable, not one of the prettiest in the Dutch vaults, but that diamond and emerald pendant is to die for! I wouldn’t have added the cabochon emerald at the end, though. It’s a lovely stone, but I think it would work better by itself, at the end of a gold chain or diamond sautoir. Added there at the end of the diamond pendant seems a bit awkward. But, it’s Queen Maxim, and she likes to play with her jewels, and bless her for it! 🙂
