Accession of Emperor Naruhito of Japan

Emperor Naruhito of Japan acceded to the Chrysanthemum Thone in the ‘Kenji to Shokei no Gi’ Ceremony at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo on the morning of May 1st, when he received the Sacred Objects, the sword, Kusanagi, and the jewel, Yasakani no Magatami, in the presence of the adult males of the Imperial Family, Crown Prince Akishino and Prince Hitachi. The Emperor succeeded to the throne at midnight after Emperor Akihito’s Abdication the previous day.

Later, the Emperor and Empress Masako received representative of the people in the Sokuigo Choken no Gi Ceremony in the Matsu no Ma State Room in the Imperial Palace, where Emperor Naruhito gave a speech, as did the Prime Minister. Prince Akishino, Princess Kiko. other members of the Imperial Family were in attendance.

Emperor Naruhito wore White Tie with the Sash, Star and Collar (for the first time) of the Order of the Chrysanthemum. Empress Masako wore a white Gown with the Meiji Scroll Tiara (for the first time), Diamond RiveresPearl Sunburst Brooch, and the Order of the Precious Crown.

Prince Akishino wore the Order of the Chrysanthemum while Princess Kiko wore the Crown Princess Diamond Scroll Tiara (for the first time) and the Order of the Precious Crown. Princess Mako (in her 20th-Birthday Tiara and the Order of the Precious Crown), Princess Kako (wearing her Diamond Tiara and the Order of the Precious Crown), and extended members of the Imperial Family (in their Personal Tiaras and the Order of the Precious Crown) were also present.
