The Proclamation of King Frederik IX (wearing the Order of the Elephant and the Order of Dannebrog) on the balcony of Christiansborg Palace on this day in 1947, after the death of his father, King Christian X. After a Cabinet Meeting, then Danish Prime Minister Knud Kristensen faced three directions from the balcony of Christiansborg Palace towards a large crowd and proclaimed each timeKing Christian X is dead. Long live His Majesty King Frederik IX!” The crowd gave a nine hurrah salute, before the King delivered a short speech asking for God’s help in his new duties, after which he was joined by Queen Ingrid (wearing King Christian X’s Royal Family Order and the King Gustaf V’s Portrait Brooch). King Frederik IX reigned until 1972, when he was succeeded by his eldest daughter, Queen Margrethe II.
