Royal Maundy Service 2019

The Queen, accompanied by Princess Eugenie, attended the Royal Maundy Service at St. George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle on April 19th. Maundy Thursday is the Christian holy day falling on the Thursday before Easter. It commemorates the Maundy and Last Supper of Jesus Christ with the Apostles. The Queen commemorates Maundy by offering ‘alms’ to senior citizens in recognition of service to the church and to the local community.

The Queen and Princess Eugenie were met by officials as they arrived at the Royal Maundy Service at St. George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle. During the service, the Queen distributed ceremonial Maundy money to 93 men and 93 women from the local community of senior citizens, in recognition of the service they have given to the church and to the local community. The money in the White Purse includes 1, 2, 3 and 4 silver penny pieces, the sum equals the number of years of the Monarch’s age, 93p this year. The Red Purse contains a £5 coin, commemorating the 200th anniversary of Queen Victoria’s birth and a 50p coin portraying Sherlock Holmes. Later, an official photograph was taken of the Queen, and the traditional nosegay, with those who had taken part in the service.
