Happy Birthday to Amanda, Duchess of Devonshire, who turns 75 today! The daughter of Commander Edward Heywood-Lonsdale and Joan Grace Heywood-Lonsdale, she is a descendent of Arthur Heywood-Lonsdale, a substantial investor in North Vancouver. In 1967, she married the Marquess of Hartington, the only son and Heir of the 11th Duke of Devonshire and the infamous Deborah, Duchess of Devonshire. The couple have three children: the Earl of Burlington, Lady Celina, and Lady Jasmine, and ten grandchildren. In 2004, they succeeded as the 12th Duke and Duchess of Devonshire, and reside at the magnificent Chatsworth House, though the family also maintain residences at Bolton Abbey and Lismore Castle. Along with the rest of the family, the Duchess shares a passion for collecting contemporary art and sculpture, and was also behind the famous Chatsworth House Style exhibition at Chatsworth, along with her daughter-in-law, Lady Burlington. I wish Her Grace a very Happy Birthday and Many Happy Returns!

  1. I do not understand why this entry refers to Deborah, Duchess of Devonshire as “infamous.”

  2. But the adjective “infamous” suggests scandal. She was far from scandalous — more of a pillar of the Establishment — and was certainly the least controversial of her sisters.
