Spanish State Visit to Argentina

King Felipe and Queen Letizia of Spain are on a State Visit to Argentina at the invitation of President Mauricio Macri from March 24th to 26th to strengthen political, economic, and diplomatic ties. The Royal Couple hosted the Presidential Couple on a State Visit in 2017.

King Felipe and Queen Letizia were welcomed by a military guard at the Jorge Newbery Metropolitan Airport in Buenos Aires, where they had arrived with the Spanish Delegation and waited for over an hour on the plane while suitable stairs were being found.

The following morning, King Felipe and Queen Letizia (wearing Queen Sofia’s Pearl Earrings) laid a wreath at the Monument of General San Martín, which was followed by an Official Welcome by President Mauricio Macri and First Lady Juliana Awada at the Casa Rosada. The King and the President had a private meeting, while the Queen and the First Lady had a meeting on “early childhood and rare diseases” before lunch.

In the afternoon, the King visited the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies as well as the Supreme Court. In the evening, the President and First Lady hosted a State Dinner in honour of the King and Queen at the Kirchner Cultural Centre.

On the 26th, King Felipe attended a working breakfast with Argentine and Spanish businessmen at the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Worship, followed by a “Buenos Aires, Good Ideas” conference. Meanwhile, Queen Letizia and the First Lady attended a meeting with representatives of the Ibero-American Alliance of Rare, Orphan or Uncommon Diseases (ALIBER). In the afternoon, the King and Queen hosted a Reception for the Spanish community in Argentina and the Spanish community living in Buenos Aires, where the King gave a speech. The King also received the Latin American Jewish Congress, and was presented the “Shalom Prize”.

In the evening, King Felipe and Queen Letizia hosted a Reception in honour of President Mauricio Macri and First Lady Juliana Awada in Buenos Aires and then traveled to the Argentine city of Córdoba, where they will attend the inauguration of the VIII International Congress of the Spanish Language (CILE), under the theme ‘America and the future of Spanish. Culture and education, technology and entrepreneurship’.

  1. Both ladies looked wonderful, especially Queen Letizia. She was wearing Queen Sofia’s gorgeous diamond and pearl earrings on that first photo opportunity. However, I must say that I was disappointed that the gala dinner was really just a business dinner with no white or even black tie for the gentlemen and just cocktail dresses for the ladies. In addition, the First Lady of Argentina wasn’t wearing jewelry at all. Pity to waste just a great opportunity!

    1. The First Lady of Argentina looks like royalty herself, she has such class and every time I’ve seen her with royalty or other First Ladies, she tends to be the best dressed. She is to royalty what Amal Clooney is to Hollywood… a lesson in class and fashion from an “outsider”.
