Queen Margrethe II of Denmark and Prince Henrik hosted King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia of Spain on their State Visit to Denmark on this day in 1980, which came right after the Spanish State Visit to the Netherlands. Queen Margrethe and Prince Henrik made a Return State Visit to Spain in 1983, and King Felipe and Queen Letizia will visit Denmark in November 2023.

King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia were received by Queen Margrethe II and Prince Henrik in an official welcome ceremony in Copenhagen, followed by a Carriage Procession, a Luncheon at the Copenhagen City Hall and Tea at Fredensborg Palace.

In the evening, Queen Margrethe (wearing the Pearl Poiré Tiara and Order of Charles III) and Prince Henrik (in the Order of Charles III) hosted a grand State Banquet at Christiansborg Palace in honour of King Juan Carlos (wearing the Order of the Elephant and the Order of the Golden Fleece) and Queen Sofia (in the Mellerio Shell Tiara and the Order of the Elephant), following a Gala Performance at the Royal Danish Theatre.

Queen Ingrid (wearing the Danish Ruby Parure and Order of Isabella the Catholic), Princess Benedikte (in the Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg Fringe Tiara and the Order of Isabella the Catholic), and Prince Richard of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg (wearing the Order of Isabella the Catholic) were also present.
