King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima in Bremen

King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima of The Netherlands visited the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen in Germany on March 6th. The Royal couple annually visit one or more German federal states, with special attention to improving economic relations. They visited Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland last year, and will visit Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Brandenburg in May.

King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima were welcomed at the airport by President of the Senate and Mayor Carsten Sieling and his wife Alexia Sieling. They then visited Airbus Defense & Space Bremen, and saw the European module of the space station ISS. Subsequently, the couple had an audience with Mayor Sieling and his wife at the Rathaus, followed by a lunch with speeches from the Mayor and the King.

Afterwards, the King and Queen walked along the Marktplatz along the statue of the Bremen Town Musicians, the animals from the fairytale of the Brothers Grimm. In the Handelskammer, King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima viewed a historical document from 1705, in which agreements have been made with the merchant navy from countries and cities that then visited Dutch waters.

In the afternoon, the Royal Couple visited the Fraunhofer Institute for Wind Energy Systems (IWES) in Bremerhaven, where about one hundred and fifty Dutch and German partners met at the “Market Place: Offshore Wind in the Netherlands and Germany ” conference. King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima concluded their visit at the Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI), speaking with Dutch and German polar and marine researchers from the Dutch Polar Program, the Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research (NIOZ), the German AWI and the MARUM Institute about changes in the polar regions and the worldwide direct or indirect consequences.
