Danish State Visit to Britain, 2000

Queen Margrethe II and Prince Henrik of Denmark were hosted by Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh on their State Visit to Britain on this day in 2000. The Queen and Duke had been on State Visits to Denmark in 1957 and 1979, while Queen Margrethe and Prince Henrik visited in 1974.

The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh greeted Queen Margrethe and Prince Henrik at Windsor Castle at an Official Welcome with a Carriage Procession and a Guard of Honour.

In the evening, the Queen (wearing Queen Alexandra’s Kokoshnik Tiara and the Order of the Elephant) and Duke (in the Order of the Elephant), hosted a State Banquet in honour of Queen Margrethe (wearing the Pearl Poiré Tiara and the Order of the Garter) and Prince Henrik (in the Order of the Bath) at St George’s Hall in Windsor Castle, which was also attended by the Prince of Wales (wearing the Order of the Elephant), Princess Royal (in Princess Andrew’s Meander Tiara), Duke and Duchess of Gloucester (in the Gloucester Honeysuckle Tiara), Prince and Princess Michael of Kent (wearing the Kent City of London Fringe Tiara), the Duchess of Grafton (in the Grafton Tiara), and the Countess of Airlie (wearing the Airlie Tiara).

The following day, Queen Margrethe and Prince Henrik visited the Millennium Dome and Millennium Bridge, followed luncheon hosted by the Lord Mayor of London at the Guildhall, at which the Queen was given the Honorary Freedom of the City of London.

In the evening, Queen Margrethe (in the Floral Aigrette Tiara) and Prince Henrik hosted a Return Banquet in honour of the Queen (in the Girls of Great Britain & Ireland Tiara) and Duke of Edinburgh at the Natural History Museum in London.

  1. I had to smile when I saw the theatrical ensembles chosen by the very talented and artistic Danish Queen for this visit. She really stands out in a crowd, even eclipsing Queen Elizabeth in her red day outfit with the amazing feather-trimmed hat. The evening clothes are beautiful. Just beautiful. The Duchess of Gloucester, born in Denmark, of course, looks particularly charming.
