Queen Juliana’s Silver Anniversary, 1962

Queen Juliana and Prince Bernhard of The Netherlands celebrated their Silver Anniversary on this day in 1962, and while the major public celebrations took place in late April and May, we are featuring them now because we will be busy with the Japanese Abdication and Accession at that time! On April 29th, the Royal Family arrived in Amsterdam on the Royal Barge, and rode in a carriage procession through the city before waving to the crowns in Dam Square in front of the Royal Palace. In the evening, after a Banquet at the Palace, Queen Juliana (wearing the Stuart Tiara), Prince Bernhard (in the Order of the Netherlands Lion), Princess Beatrix (wearing the Antique Pearl Tiara), Princess Irene (in the Aquamarine Tiara), Princess Margriet (wearing the Emerald Tiara), and Princess Christina attended a concert at the Royal Concertgebouw, followed by a fireworks display.

On the 1st of May, the Foreign Royal Guests arrived, and in the evening, after a boat tour through the canals of Amsterdam, they attended a glittering Banquet at the Amstel Hotel in Amsterdam, In addition to Queen Juliana (wearing the Dutch Diamond Bandeau and the Stuart Necklace), Prince Bernhard (in the Order of the Netherlands Lion), Princess Beatrix (wearing Queen Emma’s Diamond Tiara), Princess Irene (in the Ruby Peacock Tiara), Princess Margriet (wearing the Laurel Wreath Tiara), and Princess Christina, Royal attendees included Queen Elizabeth II (attending a rare European Royal event wearing the Vladimir Tiara) and the Duke of Edinburgh, Shah Mohamed Reza and Shahbanu Farah of Iran (in Queen Soraya’s Emerald Tiara), King Olav V of Norway, Grand Duchess Charlotte (wearing the Emerald Art Deco Tiara) and Prince Felix, Hereditary Grand Duke Jean and Hereditary Grand Duchess Josephine-Charlotte (in the Belgian Scroll Tiara) of Luxembourg, Prince Bertil and Princess Margaretha of Sweden (wearing the Four-Button Tiara), Princess Armgard of Lippe-Biesterfeld (Prince Bernhard’s mother), Prince Michael of Greece, Princess Marina, Duchess of Kent (in the Kent Pearl Bandeau) and Princess Alexandra of Kent (wearing the Diamond Star Tiara), Prince Louis-Ferdinand and Princess Kira Kirillovna of Prussia (in the Prussian Clover Coronet), Princess Tatiana Radziwiłł, Princess Maria of Savoy-Aosta, and Princess Anne of Orleans (wearing the Coty Emerald Tiara) among a host of glittering European Royalty and Nobility.

The following day, the Royals guests, with the addition of King Baudouin and Queen Fabiola of Belgium, travelled by bus (much to the horror of Queen Elizabeth II) to the Keukenhof gardens in Lisse, before a dance aboard the HMS Oranje.
