Remembrance Sunday 2018

The Queen and members of the Royal Family attended the annual Remembrance Day Service at the Cenotaph in London on Remembrance Sunday, November 11th, marking the centenary of the Armistice and the end of the First World War. For the second year, the Queen observed the proceedings from a Balcony, while the Duke of Edinburgh was absent for the first time in over 70 years.

At the beginning of the solemn ceremony, the Queen and members of the Royal Family watched 750 Armed Forces personnel form a square around the memorial, which was followed by a 2-minute silence, after which members of the royal family, including the Prince of Wales, Duke of Cambridge, Duke of Sussex, Princess Royal, Duke of York,  Earl of Wessex, Duke of Kent, and Prince Michael of Kent  and politicians laid wreaths on the Cenotaph memorial. The Prince of Wales laid a wreath on behalf of the Queen. The Queen was joined by the Duchesses of Cornwall, Cambridge, and Sussex, Sir Tim, and the Countess of Wessex, as they observed the ceremony from the Balcony of the Foreign & Commonwealth Office. Following the ceremony, thousands of veterans and servicemen and women paraded down Whitehall past the Guards memorial.

Following the Service, the Prince of Wales, Colonel of the Welsh Guards, attended  a Service at the Guards’ Chapel and laid a wreath at the Guards’ Memorial for the Welsh Guards’ Regimental Remembrance Sunday. The Princess Royal took the Salute at the March Past of Veteran Organisations on Horse Guards Parade, before she attended the Scottish Commemorative Service for the Centenary of the First Armistice in Glasgow Cathedral. The Duke of York went to a Commemorative Service marking the Centenary of the Armistice of the First World War at St Anne’s Cathedral, Belfast, while the Earl and Countess of Wessex attended the Welsh National Service of Thanksgiving at Llandaff Cathedral in Cardiff. The Duke and Duchess Gloucester attended The National Memorial Arboretum Armistice Day Service in Staffordshire.
