State Opening of Parliament, 1938

King George VI and Queen Elizabeth (wearing her Crown) ride in the Coronation Coach from Buckingham Palace to the Palace of Westminster to preside over the State Opening of Parliament on this day in 1938, the last State Opening before the outbreak of the Second World War, when they Openings were held in a restrained manner, and the next proper State Opening was in 1948.

In addition to the Queen and members of the Royal Family, there were a plethora of Peers and Peeresses in attendance, including the Marquess (a cousin of the King) and Marchioness of Carisbrooke (in Queen Victoria’s Strawberry Leaf Tiara), the Marquess and Marchioness of Dufferin and Ava (wearing the Dufferin Tiara), the Countess of Rosslyn, and Lord and Lady Lyell.
