Queen Sofia’s Emerald Parure

Queen Sofia of Spain is celebrating her 80th Birthday this week, and to mark her milestone birthday, we are taking a look at 8 pieces from the jewellery collection of the Greek Princess who became the first consort of the restored monarchy of modern Spain, featuring her Emerald Parure.

A gift from King Juan Carlos to Queen Sofia soon after his accession in 1975, the Emerald and Diamond Parure, consisting of a Necklace and Earrings, has been worn by Queen Sofia at a plethora of events, including the 1979 Spanish State Visit to Sweden and the Wedding of Crown Prince (now King) Felipe in 2004.

While she has continued to wear pieces of the Parure, Queen Sofia has also frequently loaned the Emerald and Diamond Parure to her daughter-in-law, Queen Letizia, who usually prefers to wear just the earrings in recent years. There is no doubt it will continue to be worn for years to come.

  1. I don’t know why Queen Letizia is so averse to wearing necklaces. I wouldn’t pass up the opportunity to wear this beauty!
