Queen Sofia’s Sapphire Suite

Queen Sofia of Spain is celebrating her 80th Birthday next week, and to mark her milestone birthday, we are taking a look at 8 pieces from the jewellery collection of the Greek Princess who became the first consort of the restored monarchy of modern Spain, featuring her Sapphire Parure today!

A reported gift to Queen Sofia from a member of a Middle Eastern Royal Family, she wore the piece frequently in the 1980s, including a State Visit to Canada, a State Visit to Thailand and Queen Margrethe and Prince Henrik’s 25th Wedding Anniversary Gala 1992.

In 2017, Queen Sofia loaned the earrings to her daughter-in-law, Queen letizia, who paired them with the Floral Tiara for the State banquet hosted by Emperor Akihito on Day 1 of the Spanish State Visit to Japan. They have not yet been repeated, but may make an appearance on Queen Letizia soon.

In 2022, Queen Letizia wore the Sapphire Earrings on a State Visit to Germany, and the following month for the 175th Anniversary of the Fundación del Círculo del Liceo de Barcelona at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona.
