Duke and Duchess of Windsor return to England, 1939

The Duke and Duchess of Windsor pose for the Press with Major Edward Dudley ‘Fruity’ Metcalfe at his country house, Coleman’s Hatch in the Ashdown Forest of Sussex, on this day in 1939. The Duke and Duchess were staying with their friend after being evacuated from France at the start of World War II, and was their first visit to England after the Duke’s abdication in 1936.
