Happy Anniversary to Crown Prince Al-Muhtadee Billah and Crown Princess Sarah of Brunei, who got married on this day in 2004 in a series of lavish celebrations. Dubbed the ‘Asian Wedding of the Decade’, the 17-year old bride was a minor member of the Royal Family, and completed her education after the wedding. The couple have four children. To mark the occasion, we are taking a look at the glittering wedding.
Events started on September 5th, with the traditional ceremony of Majlis Istiadat Berbedak Pengantin Diraja, when the the bride (wearing Queen Saleha’s Diamond Flame Tiara) and groom were anointed with herbs and pastes by Sultan of Brunei and Queen Saleha at The Sultans Palace in Bandar Seri Begawan.
On September 8th, the Royal Family attended the traditional ceremony of Berinai, when the Royal couple were annointed with herbs and pastes as part of the many traditional events.
The following day, Crown Prince Al-Muhtadee Billah Bolkiah married Dayangku Sarah binti Pengiran Salleh (in her Diamond Wedding Tiara) in a traditional Islamic wedding ceremony at the Istana Nurul Iman in Bandar Seri Begawan.
The following day, the Sultan of Brunei hosted a Majlis Istiadat Persantapan Pengantin Diraja Banquet in honour of the Crown Prince and new Crown Princess (wearing her Diamond Wedding Tiara) at the Balai Persantapa of the Istana Nurul Iman. Guests included the Crown Prince of Japan and the Duke of Gloucester.
