King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia in Japan

King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden have just finished a 4-day visit to Japan, to mark 150 years of Diplomatic Relations. They met and were received by members of the Japanese Imperial Family, and the focus of the visit was on innovation, research and sustainability .

On April 22nd, King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia visited the Swedish Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Japan and met representatives of Swedish school, SWEA (Swedish Women’s Educational Association) and Swedish Alumni Network. Later, they visited the National Museum of Modern Art Tokyo (MOMAT) to get an insight into Japanese modern art history.

On April 23rd, King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia were accompanied by Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko visited the special exhibition ‘The Art of Natural Science in Sweden,’ a collaboration between Gustavianum at Uppsala University and Museum Intermediatheque at Tokyo University, at the JP Tower Museum Intermediatheque in Tokyo. They also visited the UNICEF House, the Swedish embassy, and attended a seminar on future transport. In the evening, the Imperial Couple hosted a Dinner for their Swedish guests at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo.

On April 24th, the King and Queen attended a forum on business form and Dementia. The Queen attended a panel on “Education in Dementia” and “Life solutions for people with Dementia” while the King attended the Japan-Sweden Business Summit. Afterwards, the Royal Couple hosted Crown Prince Naruhito of Japan and Crown Princess Masako at lunch at Palace Hotel in Tokyo, which was followed by a visit to Tokyo’s OS Arena in Sendagaya for the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Summer Games. In the evening, the King and Queen attended a Dinner  marking 150 years of diplomatic relations hosted by the Swedish Ambassador.

On April 25th, the King and the Queen visited Japan Business Federation and attended a Business Sweden Seminar, before Queen Silvia and Princess Takamado visited a Dementia Centre. Afterwards, the Royal Couple visited the ancient Samurai town of Kamakura before attending a Reception and Dinner hosted by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe at Akasaka Palace in Tokyo.
