Ancona Tiara

Happy Birthday to Princess Camilla of the Bourbon-Two Sicilies, Duchess of Castro, who turns 47 today! An Italian Heiress married to a Head of the House of Bourbon-Two Sicilies who is quite active on the European Social Circuit, the Duchess attends quite a few glittering events. To mark her birthday today, we are taking a look at the glittering Ancona Tiara, a royal tiara that was sold at auction and has remained in the same royal family.

Made for Princess Maria Anna Carolina of Saxony around her 1817 to the Grand Duke of Tuscany, the Tiara passed to her husband’s second wife, Princess Maria Antonia of the Two Sicilies, and was inherited by their daughter, Archduchess Maria Isabella and passed down her Bourbon-Two Sicilies descendants until Princess Lucia of Bourbon-Two Sicilies, who was married to Prince Eugenio of Savoy, Duke of Ancona. The Tiara was loaned to her sister-in-law, Princess Lydia d’Arenberg, the Duchess of Genoa, who wore the Ancona Tiara in a series of Official Portraits. After the abolition of the Italian Monarchy, the Prince Eugenio and Princess Lucia relocated to Brazil, and a few years after his death, in 1999, she sold the Ancona Tiara at auction.

However, unlike most royal tiaras sold at auction, the Ancona Tiara was bought by Crociani Family, who gifted the piece to their daughter, the Duchess of Castro, married to a descendent of the aforementioned Princess Maria Antonia. The Duchess first wore the Tiara at the 2004 wedding of Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark, and his 50th Birthday.

The Bourbon-Two Sicilies family is very active on social media, and we get to see many behind-the-scenes appearances of the Ancona Tiara, quite more than most former Royal Families. We will no doubt continue to see it in years to come, especially when the Duke and Duchess’ daughters, Princess Maria Carolina and Princess Maria-Chiara, start wearing Tiaras.

  1. This tiara is very beautiful. It’s substantial, balanced, and boasts natural pearls. What’s not to like? It was so cool that Princess Camilla’s family was able to get it for her. I wish her joy on her birthday!
