A few days later, a glittering Wedding banquet was held at the Marble Palace in Tehran, where caviar from the Caspian Sea and Consommé Royal were served. The couple had one daughter and succeeded to the Iranian Throne in 1941, but divorced in 1948, with the official statement citing “the Persian climate had endangered the health of Empress Fawzia, and that thus it was agreed that the Egyptian King’s sister be divorced.” The Shah married twice more, to Soraya Esfandiary-Bakhtiari and Farah Diba, and lost his throne after the Iranian Revolution. 1. Wow! This was quite a different wedding from the next two. Princess Fawzia’s dress had the streamlined elegance of the 30’s, but with the addition of a million diamonds in her tiara and in her multiple necklaces.
