Mary Berry’s Country House Secrets

Famous British food writer and TV personality Mary Berry, presented a four=part series on the BBC late last year, called “Mary Berry’s Country House Secrets”, in which she explored four stately homes through their culinary pursuits.

Highclere Castle

In the first episode, Mary meets the Earl and Countess of Carnarvon at Highclere Castle, where she cooks Cannon of lamb with celeriac potato cake, Raspberry tartlets, Gamekeeper’s stew, and Gooseberry fool.

Scone Palace

In the second episode, Mary visits the Countess of Mansfield, Lord Stormon, and Lady Iona Murray at Scone Palace, where she made Cock-a-leekie soup, Venison Wellington with caramelised onions and port jus, and Cranachan.

Powderham Castle

In the third episode, Mary Berry met the Earl and Countess of Devon, Lord Courtenay, and Lady Joscelyn at Powderham Castle, and cooked Classic scones, Peach posset, Midsummer asparagus, goats’ cheese and fig salad, Butterfly leg of lamb with flatbreads and herby raita, and Duck breast with calvados and apple.

Goodwood House

The fourth episode featured Goodwood House, where Mary met Lord March, the Duchess of Richmond, and Lady Naomi Gordon-Lennox, and made Earl Grey tea bread, Cricket cake with strawberries and lemon curd, Homemade lemon curd, Salmon, asparagus and quails’ eggs with tarragon dressing, and Coq au vin.

  2. A picture I once owned of Emila Charlotte Lennox, (an ancestor of the family) by John Hoppner, and sold at Sotheby’s was bought by the Duke, and I was delighted to see it hanging in the hall of Goodwood House.
