Royals at the Olympics 2018

Royals from around the world attend the Olympics, to support their country’s teams and as members of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). On this page (which will be updated daily), we are featuring all the royal appearances at the PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympic Games in South Korea.

On the eve of the opening ceremony, King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands, Prince Albert II of Monaco, Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark, and the Princess Royal attended the IOC President’s Dinner. Many of them also attended the 132nd IOC session in the previous days.

Day 1

Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg, Prince Albert II of Monaco, and the Princess Royal were spotted at the Opening Ceremony of the Games on February 9th. Crown Prince Frederik returned to Denmark when the condition of his father, Prince Henrik, deteriorated.

On February 10th, Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg attended the Women’s ice hockey preliminary match between Korea and Switzerland, while King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima met Dutch athletes during a visit to the Gangneung Athletes Village.

On February 11th, King Willem-Alexander celebrated the gold medal of Dutch athlete Sven Kramer in the Speed Skating Men’s 5000m.

On February 12th, Prince Albert of Monaco was seen at a Figure Skating Team Event, while King Willem-Alexander congratulated gold medal winner Ireen Wust of The Netherlands after the Ladies 1,500m Long Track Speed Skating final.

On February 13th, King Willem-Alexander celebrated the Gold medal of Kjeld Nuis in the Men’s 1500m Speed Skating, and Crown Prince Haakon met with members of the Norwegian Team. Later, King Willem-Alexander and Princess Anne attended the short-track events.

On February 14th, Crown Prince Haakon attended the men’s nordic combined individual normal hill NH/10km ski jumping competition.

On February 15th, Crown Prince Haakon attended the men’s 20km individual biathlon event, the Men’s Downhill, the women’s 10km freestyle cross-country competition, and the women’s 10km freestyle cross-country competition. He also gave an interview.

On February 17th, Prince Albert posed for selfies with friends at the preliminary round men’s ice hockey game. King Carl Gustaf of Sweden celebrated with the Swedish Silver medalists after the Ladies’ 4x5km Relay.

  1. There are a few royals who were once Olympians that are attending the games. I think one of them is Prince Albert II of Monaco (bobsleigh) and another is Princess Anne the Princess Royal (equestrian events). That I know of, two crown princes who later became kings each won gold medals in sailing, King Olav of Norway and King Constantine of Greece- which is only fitting since they are both descended from Danish kings!
