Pascua Militar 2018

King Felipe and Queen Letizia of Spain presided at the traditional Pascua Militar Ceremony at the Royal Palace of Madrid on January 6th. The event marks the beginning of the military year and a Spanish National holiday; Epiphany. For the first time in this reign, King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia were also present, as part of their 80th Birthday celebrations this year.

King Felipe, Queen Letizia, King Juan Carlos, and Queen Sofia viewed the New Year’s Military Parade outside the Royal Palace of Madrid. After the National Anthem and a 21 gun salute, King Felipe reviewed the Royal Guard. Inside, the Kings and Queens attended a Reception for officials from the Government, the Ministry of Defence, and the Civil Guard in the Saleta de Gasparini, and King Felipe presented honours in the Throne Hall of the Palace.

King Felipe wore Frigate Captain Uniform with the Neck Badge of the Order of the Golden Fleece, the Sash of the Royal and Military Order of Saint Hermenegild and the stars of his other honours. Queen Letizia wore a floor length navy blue velvet skirt and jacket with her Bulgari aquamarine earrings. King Juan Carlos wore the Uniform of the Captain General of the Army with the Neck Badge of the Order of the Golden Fleece, the Sash of the Royal and Military Order of Saint Hermenegild and the stars of his other honours. Queen Sofia wore a floor length floral patterned skirt and jacket with pearl earrings, a Pearl Necklace with Queen Frederica’s Ruby Pendant, and the Countess of Barcelona’s pearl brooch.

  1. Queen Sophia wore my favorite pearl necklace, the one with the ruby pendant attached. I love it! She looks marvelous at her 79 years. Queen Letizia’s blue velvet dress is absolutely beautiful and so appropriate for the event. Her aquamarine earrings were the perfect complement. Both men looked excellent in their military uniforms, and especially King Juan Carlos looked much improved in his walking. I think it’s so cool that there were two kings present on Three King’s Day!
