Wedding of Princess Anne and Captain Mark Phillips

Princess Anne married fellow equestrian Captain Mark Phillips at Westminster Abbey in London on this day in 1973. While the couple divorced in 1992, we are taking a look at their lavish wedding below-

Princess Anne rode to Westminster Abbey in the Glass State Coach, and was accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh, who walked her up the aisle.

The ceremony and service was officiated by Donald Coggan, the Archbishop of Canterbury. After signing the register, and curtsying to the Queen, the couple walked down the aisle.

Afterwards, the couple rode back to Buckingham Palace, for the traditional Balcony appearance.

Royal Guests at the wedding included Princess Margarita of Hohenlohe-Langenburg, (aunt of the bride), Princess Sophie (another aunt) and Prince George of Hanover, Queen Mother Ingrid of Denmark, King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden, King Constantine and Queen Anne Marie of Greece, Prince Rainer and Princess Grace, of Monaco, Princess Beatrix and Prince Claus of the Netherlands, then Crown Prince Harald and Crown Princess Sonja of Norway, Crown Prince Alexander of Serbia, and then Prince Juan Carlos and Princess Sofia of Spain.

Princess Anne wore a Tudor-inspired high-necked and dramatic-sleeved gown by Maureen Baker of Susan Small with Queen Mary’s Fringe Tiara, borrowed from the Queen Mother,. Captain Mark Phillips wore the full dress uniform of the Queen’s Dragoon Guards, his regiment.

  1. Princess Anne and I got married within 4 days of each other. I thought she and Captain Phillips made such a handsome pair. Living in the tropics, my dress was a lot lighter than hers, though. No long sleeves for me! 🙂 But alas, neither of our marriages passed the test of time. I’m glad she found contentment later on. 🙂
