State Opening of Parliament, 1952

Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh ride in the Irish State coach to the Palace of Westminster for the State Opening of Parliament on this day in 1952. This was the first State Opening in the Queen’s reign, and she was followed by her Mistress of the Robes, Mary, Duchess of Devonshire (in the Devonshire Palmette Tiara). After returning, the Queen, Duke, Prince Charles, and Princess Anne waved to the assembled crowds from the Balcony of Buckingham Palace.
