Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary in Japan

Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary of Denmark were on a four-day visit to Japan, from October 8-12, to mark this year’s 150th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Denmark and Japan.

Day 1

On arrival, Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary were greeted by Crown Prince Naruhito and Crown Princess Masako of Japan. The next day, the Crown Prince couple participated in the ‘Denmark Festival & Walkathon’, where they took part in a 5.7 km long Walkathon, met the festival’s Danish companies, and presented Walkathon charity donations to two NGOs. The festival focused on Denmark and Danish lifestyle and celebrated the 150th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Japan and Denmark. In the evening, Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary were hosted by Ambassador Freddy Svane and Mrs Lise Frederiksen at a dinner at the Danish Embassy in Tokyo.

Day 2

The Crown Prince couple were in Kanazawa on Day 2, where they were hosted at breakfast by Deputy Mayor Daizo Hosoda at the Tsubajin restaurant. Afterwards, they went on a guided tour through the Kenrokuen garden, and then visited the Everyday Life – Signs of Awareness exhibition at the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art. The Crown Prince couple were shown around the exhibition and had the opportunity to talk with selected Danish and Japanese designers. They also attended the award ceremony where Crown Prince Frederik gave a speech and presented five awards to Japanese artists to study in Denmark.

Day 3

On Day 3, Crown Prince Frederik visited Higashi-Matsushima, going to the Naruse Oka primary school, the “Denmark Calligraphy” Exhibition, the Earthquake Memorial Park, while Crown Princess Mary visited Funabashi, going to the Funabashi Andersen Park, Nordic Fair and the Adventure Pavilion, and the Children’s Museum. In the evening, the Crown Prince Couple visited Japan’s National Archives with Crown Prince Naruhito in Tokyo.

Day 4

On Day 4, the Crown Prince Couple attended the official opening of Hotel Gajoen, where Crown Prince Frederik gave a speech. Afterwards, he attended the Global Food Market and Consumer Trends Seminar, and Crown Princess Mary visited the Design Lounge and attended the Danish Design DNA: Towards a New Leadership Model seminar. Later, the Couple had Breakfast with Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko at the Imperial Palace. After a series of engagements in the afternoon, Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary had dinner with Crown Prince Naruhito at the Togu Palace.

Day 5

On the last day, the Crown Prince Couple attended a Food and lifestyle event at the Danish Embassy Room and visited the Funabashi Primary School. Crown Prince Frederik visited the Kewpie Corporation, while Crown Princess Mary visited the National Center for Child Health and Development and attended the Design Walk. In the evening, the Couple attended the Official celebration of the 150th anniversary of Diplomatic Relations between Denmark and Japan at the Hotel Gajoen. Afterwards, they hosted an official dinner with the Japanese Crown Princely Couple.

  1. Crown Princess Mary’s white lace dress is stunning! She looked very nice wherever she went. And I’m always so happy to see Crown Princess Masako out and about!
