Grand Duchess Joséphine Charlotte of Luxembourg was born on this day in 1927, exactly 90 years ago. The eldest child and only daughter of King Leopold III of Belgium and Princess Astrid of Sweden, her mother tragically died in a car crash in 1935, and her father later married Lilian Baels, who was an affectionate and adored stepmother. During WWII, the family was kept under house-arrest by the Nazis, being freed in 1945, and setteling in Switzerland, eventually returning to Belgium in 1950, when Princess Joséphine Charlotte started to undertake official duties. Her two younger brothers became King Baudoin and King Albert of Belgium. In 1953, she married Hereditary Grand Duke Jean of Luxembourg. The couple had five children, including the current Grand Duke Henri. In 1964, her mother-in-law abdicated and the couple became Grand Duke Jean and Grand Duchess Joséphine Charlotte, reigning for 36 years, during which she supported social and cultural endeavours, until his abdication in 2000, when the couple retired from duties. Grand Duchess Joséphine Charlotte died from lung cancer at Fischbach Castle in 2005.
