Queen Elizabeth II (wearing the Belgian Sapphire Tiara and George VI Sapphire Parure) and the Duke of Edinburgh host President Wee Kim Wee and First Lady Koh Sok Hiong of Singapore at a Return Banquet on the Royal Yacht Britannia in Singapore, during a State Visit to Singapore, on this day in 1989.
I was so sad when they decommissioned the Brittania. I thought it gave a very good return for the money invested in her. Great Britain owes a great deal to its navy and I thought it was fitting that its monarch should have a ship to go about. I think saying goodbye to that ship was one of the few times the Queen has been seen shedding a tear in public.
I agree! Britannia was one of the most ingenious forms of travel! Now only the Danish & Norwegian Royals have yachts left!
You’re so right! How wonderful it is to see the Queen of Denmark arrive in her yacht, how regal is that! I’m just saying…. 🙂
