Queen opens Queensferry Crossing

The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh opened the Queensferry Crossing at South Queensferry near Edinburgh on September 4th. This was the Duke’s first official engagement since retiring last month.

On the South side of the Queensferry Crossing, The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh were met by Councillor Frank Ross, the Lord Provost of the City of Edinburgh and Lord Lieutenant, and First Minister Nicola Sturgeon. They then met representatives of Forth Crossing Bridge Constructors (FCBC) and schoolchildren and there was a blessing by the Moderator of the Church of Scotland before the Queen cut a ribbon to open the bridge.

Afterwards, the Queen and Duke crossed the new bridge to the Cube Arena on the North side where the Queen unveiled a plaque to mark the opening of the Queensferry Crossing and gave a speech, saying “The Duke of Edinburgh and I are delighted to be able to join the people of Scotland, to celebrate this extraordinary achievement“. There was a traditional folk performance and a poem reading before the presentation of a gift and a posy. The Queen and Duke meet FCBC staff before departing.

The Queen wore a blue coat and hat, pairing her customary Three Strand Pearl Necklace with Queen Mary’s Thistle brooch.

  1. Wow! That is one magnificent bridge! Another thing to add to my wish list for when I visit Scotland for the Military Tattoo! The Queen looked lovely in blue and her brooch is amazing. It was also very nice to see Prince Philip still supporting his wife, even though he’s retired. Love it!
