Princess Diana in Pakistan, 1997

Happy 70th Pakistan Independence Day! Every year on August 14th (15th for India), Pakistan celebrates Independence from Britain. Though the Queen hasn’t been Queen of Pakistan since 1956, we are covering some of the royal visits to Pakistan today, including Diana, Princess of Wales’ visits in 1996 and 1997 below-

In 1996, the former Princess of Wales visited Lahore to help raise money to build the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital, built by her friend cricketer turned politician Imran Khan. The Princess attended fundraising functions and visited sick children. She was on a private 2-day visit to her friend and his now ex-wife Jemima.

In June that year, she attended an event at the Dorchester Hotel in London in aid of the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Hospital. She was wearing an ivory couture Shalwar Kameez as a tribute to Imran Khan who has organized the event.

In 1997, Diana, Princess of Wales was back in Pakistan to officially open the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital, during which time she also attended a dinner at the Lahore Fort.
