Duke and Duchess of Cambridge in Belgium

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are in Belgium on July 30th and 31st to attended a series of events to mark the centenary of the Battle of Passchendaele. Also present were King Philippe and Queen Mathilde of Belgium.

King Philippe and Queen Mathilde of Belgium were joined by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge as they attended the Last Post at the Menin Gate in Ypres, where the Duke gave a speech. Afterwards, the two couples visited the In Flanders Field Museum, where they met relatives of soldiers of the First World War, followed by a memorial event at the Grand Place. Also present was Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence.

King Philippe wore a dark suit with a grey tie. Queen Mathilde wore a grey dress and lace coat with a Philip Treacy grey hat and pearl earrings. The Duke of Cambridge wore a navy suit with the regimental tie of the Household Division and medals. The Duchess repeated her Alexander McQueen coat from Princess Charlotte’s christening with a Lock & Co. hat, Balenciaga pearl earrings, and pearl brooch.

This battle was fought in Belgium- hence the presence of King Philippe and Queen Mathilde- but it involved quite a large number of British soldiers, which is why the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are involved in the ceremony, All wars are bad, but I think WW I was especially so. I don’t think anyone was quite prepared for the carnage that followed and I think that is why these ceremonies are so poignant. Both ladies were respectful and lovely, and the gentlemen formal and proper, and one cannot ask for more.
