Happy Birthday to HRH The Duchess of Gloucester! Born Birgitte Eva van Deurs Henriksen in Denmark, she was educated in Odense and at finishing schools in Lausanne and Cambridge, before doing a three-year course in Commercial and Economic Studies in Copenhagen, and then working as a secretary at the Royal Danish Embassy in London. In 1972, she married Prince Richard of Gloucester, the younger son of Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester and Lady Alice Montagu Douglas Scott. The new Princess Richard didn’t expect to become Duchess, but he became the Heir to the Dukedom of Gloucester after the death of his brother soon after, having to give up his career as an architect and taking up duties as a full-time working member of the Royal Family, after succeeding his father in 1974. The Duke and Duchess have three children and resided at Barnwell Manor until 1995, when they moved into an apartment at Kensington Palace. Every year, the Duchess carries out a plethora of engagements on behalf of the Queen, and is the patron of many charities, including the Children’s Society; Parkinson’s UK; Hope for Youth Northern Ireland; Scottish Opera; Lawn Tennis Association; the Royal School of Needlework; and Princess Helena College; the President of the Royal Academy of Music; and Prostate Cancer UK. We wish HRH a very Happy Birthday and Many Happy Returns!

  1. I have nothing but good things to say about the Duchess of Gloucester. She’s smart, beautiful, hard-working, discrete, and what’s even more remarkable, she has never put a foot wrong! For someone who was not raised in an aristocratic family, her behavior is an example that modern royals should follow. Both she and her husband have done nothing but their duty, and they have done it well and with grace. Her jewels are to die for! I have no idea how the Gloucesters have managed to hold on them. They had to lease the family estate and now live in apartments at Kensington Palace, but that is understandable. Another thing is, their children seem to take after their parents. All three of them seem to be well-adjusted people with successful, happy lives. Congratulations to the Duchess on her birthday! May there be many more!
