The Wedding Gala of King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden (wearing the Connaught Tiara, a favourite of her late mother-in-law), on this day in 1976, which began with a gala performance at the Royal Opera in Stockholm, followed by a dinner and dance for 200 guests at Drottningholm Palace, on the eve of their Wedding. One of the notable highlights from the evening was the world premiere of Swedish band ABBA’s famous song “Dancing Queen”.

There was a plethora of foreign royal guests at the gala, including Crown Prince Harald and Crown Princess Sonja (in the Norwegian Emerald Parure) of Norway, and Grand Duke Jean and Grand Duchess Josephine Charlotte (in the Grand Duchess Adélaïde Tiara) of Luxembourg, and the Duke and Duchess (in her Necklace Tiara) of Gloucester. The King’s sisters: Princess Margretha (wearing the 9-Prong Tiara and Queen Josefina’s Amethyst Necklace), Princess Brigitta (wearing the Leuchtenberg Sapphire Parure), Princess Desiree (wearing the Baden Fringe Tiara), and Princess Christina (wearing the Four Button Tiara) were also present, as was soon-to-be Princess Lilian (wearing her Laurel Wreath Tiara) and Countess Marianne Bernadotte (in her Pearl and Diamond Tiara).
