Swedish State Visit to Indonesia

King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden were on a State Visit to Indonesia from May 22nd to 24th at the invitation of President Joko Widodo, to strengthen the political, economic and cultural relations between Sweden and Indonesia in the long term.

The 1st day of King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia’s State Visit to Indonesia started at an official reception ceremony at the Presidential Palace in Bogor, where they were welcomed by President Joko Widodo and First Lady Iriana Widodo. After the playing of the national anthems, the gun salute, tree planting ceremony, and the inspection of the guard of honour, the official delegation was presented. The King and President had a private talk on the Veranda, and then were present at the signing of bilateral agreements.

The Queen and the First Lady attended an exhibition of Indonesian handicrafts. The reception ceremony was followed by a state banquet at the Presidential Palace in Bogor. In the afternoon, the King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia took part in a seminar on forestry and sustainability at the International Center for Forestry Research (CIFOR). After a presentation of the Center’s activities, the King and Queen took part in a tree planting ceremony in the garden. This was followed by a seminar on the theme of forestry, sustainability, packaging and wood, with participants from CIFOR, Swedish and Indonesian public authorities, and companies.  In the evening, the King and Queen attend a reception at the Swedish Embassy in Jakarta, hosted by the Ambassador, Johanna Brismar Skoog.

On Day 2, King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia attended a wreath-laying ceremony at the monument to national heroes, Kalibata National Heroes Cemetery. Afterwards, the King visited a Hackathon, while the Queen visited the Jakarta Creative Hub, a gathering place for creative people who want to test new ideas and concepts in design, fashion and textiles. Later, the Royal couple visited Jakarta’s old town Kota Tua for a lunch and to get an insight into Jakarta’s history at exhibitions of batik and wayang (Indonesian puppetry). In the afternoon, the King Carl Gustaf attended the High Level Forum Indonesia-Sweden Executive Forum and then visited Jakarta’s Tanjung Priok Port, while Queen Silvia visited a the Manggarai Community Library, where she met young people from the Indonesian Youth Network on Violence against Children (YNVAC) and from the NGO Komunitas Jendela Jakarta (Window’s of Jakarta Community). After the visit, she took part in a roundtable discussion with policy makers from Indonesia and Sweden, youth representatives and representatives of NGOs on how the two countries can work to stop violence against children. In the evening, the King and Queen hosted a reception at the Hotel Indonesia Kempinski. In his speech, King Carl Gustaf said:

“I hope this evening will give you the opportunity to learn about Sweden a little better. But above all, I hope that it will give you an opportunity to get to know each other. After all, the personal relationships – friendship formed through collaboration and sharing – that really connects our countries. “

King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia spent Day 3 in Bandung, where they viewed a presentation on Indonesia’s economic and political prospects, including issues of environment and climate change, during the train journey. After the Official welcome, the royal couple had lunch at the Mayor’s residence. Later, they visited the the Institute of Technology Bandung and attended a seminar on the Triple Helix and innovation. The final engagement of the day, and state visit, was a Press Conference.
