Portuguese State Visit to Luxembourg

President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa of Portugal started a 2-day State Visit to Luxembourg on May 23rd, where he is hosted by the Grand Ducal Family.

President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa of Portugal was welcomed by Grand Duke Henri and Grand Duchess Maria Theresa of Luxembourg in an official welcome ceremony in front of the Grand Ducal Palace. After national anthems, a review of troops and a presentation of the respective delegations, the group moved inside the Palace, where they exchanged gifts and posed for an official photograph with Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume and Hereditary Grand Duchess Stéphanie. In the afternoon, President de Sousa was joined by the Grand Duke and Grand Duchess on the Corniche, known as the most beautiful balcony in Europe, before a private luncheon. Later, they visited the Hôtel de Ville of Luxembourg City.

Grand Duke Henri wore a dark suit with a rust tie. Grand Duchess Maria Theresa wore a magenta dress and coat by Belgian couturier Yves Dooms and a similar ensemble later by the same designer. Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume wore a dark suit with a striped orange and blue tie. Hereditary Grand Duchess Stéphanie wore a pink lace dress.

In the evening, Grand Duke Henri and Grand Duchess Maria Theresa hosted a State Banquet at the Grand Ducal Palace. Both the Grand Duke and President gave speeches.

At the Banquet, Grand Duke Henri wore White Tie with the Military Order of Saint James of the Sword. Grand Duchess Maria Theresa wore a metallic gown and jacket with the Belgian Scroll Tiara, pearl earrings, diamond riviere and the Order of Prince Henry. Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume wore White Tie with a Portuguese Order. Hereditary Grand Duchess Stéphanie wore a black gown with her Butterfly Tiara, diamond earrings, floral brooch and a Portuguese Order.

UPDATE- On Day 2, Grand Duke Henri and the President visited the Château de Betzdorf, which is the birthplace of the Grand Duke and is now the headquarters of SES, a satellite communication services company. After a brief presentation of the company’s activities, the Grand Duke and President visited the Satellite Control Center. Later they also visited Esch-Belval and the House of Knowledge, and were joined by Grand Duchess Maria Teresa for a visit to the National Museum of History and Art and the Cathédrale Notre-Dame. In the evening, the President hosted a return reception and concert of the Casa da Música at the Salle de Musique de Chambre for the Grand Ducal Family.
