Royal Bridesmaids and Pageboys

Prince George and Princess Charlotte of Cambridge will serve as the Pageboy and Bridesmaid for their aunt, Pippa Middleton, on May 20th. In honour of the upcoming wedding, we are taking a look at previous royal bridesmaids and page boys-

At the wedding of the future King George V and Mary of Teck in 1893, the bridal party included Princess Victoria and Princess Maud of Wales; Princess Victoria Melita, Princess Alexandra, and Princess Beatrice of Edinburgh; Princess Margaret and Princess Patricia of Connaught; Princess Alice and Princess Victoria Eugenie of Battenberg; and Princess Helena Victoria of Schleswig-Holstein.

The bridal party of Princess Margaret of Connaught, when she married Crown Prince Gustaf Adolf of Sweden in 1905, included Princess Victoria Eugenie of BattenbergPrincess Beatrice of Edinburgh, and her sister, Princess Patricia.

The eight bridesmaids of Princess Marina of Greece when she married Prince George, Duke of Kent in 1934 included Princess Irene of GreeceGrand Duchess Kira Kirillovna of Russia, Future Queen Juliana of the Netherlands, and the now Queen Elizabeth II.

At the wedding of Lady Alice Montagu Douglas Scott and Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester in 1935, the junior bridesmaids were Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret.

At the wedding of Patricia, now the 2nd Countess Mountbatten, to Lord Brabourne in 1946, the bridesmaids were the then Princess Elizabeth, Princess Margaret, Princess Alexandra of Kent, and the bride’s sister, Lady Pamela. (This wedding was the first occasion the public got of the romance between the now Queen and Duke of Edinburgh)

At the wedding of the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh in 1947, the bridal party included Princess Margaret, Princess Alexandra of Kent, Lady Pamela Mountbatten, Margaret Rhodes, and Lady Elizabeth Longman. Prince William of Gloucester and Prince Michael of Kent were the pageboys.

Princess Margaret also served as a bridesmaid at the wedding of Margaret Elphinstone and Denys Rhodes in 1950.

In turn, at her own wedding in 1960, Princess Margaret had her niece, Princess Anne, as her chief bridesmaid when she married Antony Armstrong Jones in 1960.

Princess Anne also served as a bridesmaid at the wedding of Lady Pamela Mountbatten to David Hicks in 1960.

Again, Princess Anne was a bridesmaid at the wedding of the Duke of Kent and Katherine Worsley in 1961…

… and again at the wedding of Princess Alexandra of Kent and Angus Ogilvy in 1963.

Princess Alexandra herself was a bridesmaid (along with Princess Anne of Orléans, Princesses Benedikte and Anne-Marie of Denmark, Princess Tatiana Radziwiłł, Princess Irene of the Netherlands, Infanta Pilar of Spain, and Princess Irene of Greece.) at the wedding of Don Juan Carlos of Spain and Princess Sofia of Greece in 1962.

Prince Andrew was a pageboy at a society wedding in Westminster Abbey in 1966.

Princess Anne was also a bridesmaid at the wedding of King Constantine of Greece and Princess Anne Marie of Denmark (granddaughter of Princess Margaret of Connaught) in 1964, along with Princess Irene of Greece, Princess Christina of Sweden, Crown Princess Margarita of Romania, Princess Tatiana Radziwiłł, and Princess Clarissa of Hesse.

In turn, Princess Anne had her cousin, Lady Sarah Chatto, as a bridesmaid while her younger brother, Prince Edward, was a pageboy.

In 1978, the then Lady Diana Spencer was a bridesmaid at the wedding of her sister, Lady Jane, to Robert Fellows.

In turn, at her own wedding in 1981, her senior bridesmaids included Lady Sarah Chatto and India Hicks (daughter of the aforementioned Lady Pamela).

Prince William was a pageboy at the wedding of Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson in 1986…

The wedding of Lady Sarah Armstrong Jones and David Chatto in 1994 counted Zara Phillips, daughter of Princess Anne, as a bridesmaid.

      1. You forgot – Princess Alexandra of Kent was one … but you are forgiven because of all the joy you give us all!

  2. I thoroughly enjoyed this piece! It’s amazing how traditions continue from one generation to the next. I do think you have a little typo in the wedding date of the Duke of Kent. It was in 1934, not 1924. 🙂
