Duchess of Cambridge in Luxembourg

The Duchess of Cambridge visited Luxembourg on 11th May to participate in the official commemoration of the 1867 Treaty of London. She also attended a series of engagements with the Hereditary Grand Ducal Couple to celebrate the cultural and historic ties between the UK and Luxembourg.

On arrival in Luxembourg, the Duchess of Cambridge, with Hereditary Grand Duchess Stéphanie of Luxembourg, visited the Grand Duke Jean Museum of Modern Art (MUDAM) to tour current exhibitions by British artists Sir Tony Cragg and Darren Almond. They also attended a reception with leading young Luxembourgers in the fields of culture, education, business and the charitable sector. Afterwards, the Duchess visited Place Clairefontaine, and toured a cycling themed festival, which celebrates the shared UK and Luxembourg passion for the sport. She was introduced to the Grand Duchy’s most famous cycling icons, and met children who are designing Tour de France jerseys, ahead of the tour coming to Luxembourg in July. The Duchess also unveiled a mural of British cyclist Tom Simpson and Luxembourgish cycling legend Charly Gaul.

Next, she called on Grand Duke Henri and Grand Duchess Maria Theresa of Luxembourg (recently returned from the King of Norway’s 80th Birthday) at the Grand Ducal Palace. Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume, Hereditary Grand Duchess Stéphanie, and Princess Alexandra were also present.

Afterwards, the Duchess was joined by the Hereditary Grand Duke and Hereditary Grand Duchess at the official commemoration of the 1867 Treaty of London, which confirmed Luxembourg’s independence and neutrality, at the Luxembourg City Museum. A new collection about Luxembourg’s history was also unveiled, before the Duchess, Hereditary Grand Duke, Hereditary Grand Duchess, and other guests, were led on a short walk outside the museum to take in the stunning views of the capital on the corniche.

Later, the Duchess of Cambridge, Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume, and Hereditary Grand Duchess Stéphanie visited the the Dräi Eechelen Museum for the main commemoration event, where the Prime Minister, Mayor and Museum Director gave speeches. She was given a guided tour of ‘Luxembourg 1867 – Open City’, the new exhibition, which explained how the dismantling of Luxembourg’s fortifications laid the foundation for the transformation of Luxembourg into an open and outward-looking city and country. Afterwards, she boarded her flight and returned to the UK.

Hereditary Grand Duchess Stéphanie wore a red Paule Ka coat with gold earrings and a leaf pendant. The Duchess of Cambridge wore a pale blue Emilia Wickstead coat with new Kiki McDonough topaz earrings and a Mapin & Web pendant.
