Queen Silvia in Portugal

Queen Silvia of Sweden visited the Hospicio Princesa Dona Maria Amélia in Funchal in Portugal on May 2nd. The Princess Dona Maria Amelia Hospital (Hospicio Princesa Dona Maria Amélia) is a hospital founded in memory of Princess Maria Amélia of Brazil who died of tuberculosis in Funchal, Portugal in 1853. Her mother, Empress Amélie of Brazil, was a sister of Queen Josefina of Sweden, and succeeding Kings and Queens of Sweden continued to fulfill the legacy of the hospital.

Queen Silvia attended the opening of the new building of the Princess Dona Maria Amelia Hospital (Hospicio Princesa Dona Maria Amélia) in Funchal, Portugal, where she met officials, gave a speech, and unveiled a plaque. The Queen also visited the Funchal Botanical Garden.
