Today marks the Death anniversary of Queen Victoria Eugenie of Spain, who died on this day in 1969. Born Princess Victoria Eugenie of Battenberg, to Prince Henry of Battenberg and Princess Beatrice of the United Kingdom she was named after her her maternal grandmother, Queen Victoria, and godmother, Empress Eugenie of France. Growing up in the UK, she met King Alfonso XIII of Spain, while he was visiting her uncle King Edward VII. They got married in 1906, and were the victims of a failed assassination attempt on their wedding day. The King and Queen had seven children, but two of their four sons had hemophilia, which she inherited  from Queen Victoria, which led to the breakup of their marriage. Though she was a popular Queen, the family went into exile in 1931, after the establishment of the Second Spanish Republic. Queen Victoria Eugenie lived in London, Rome, and in Switzerland during her exile, where she spent time with family and had a busy social schedule. In 1968, the Queen returned to Spain for the christening of her great-grandson, now King Felipe, and her heath started to fail soon afterwards. On this day in 1969, she died in Lausanne, and was initially buried there. In 1985, her grandson, who became King Juan Carlos in 1975, had her remains reinterred in the Royal Crypt of the Monastery of El Escorial.
