Coronation of King Birendra of Nepal, 1975
Today marks the 42nd anniversary of the Coronation of King Birendra and Queen Aishwarya of Nepal, who were crowned on this day in 1975 in a lavish ceremony in Kathmandu. Among the guests were the Prince of Wales, Lord Mountbatten, then Crown Princess Michiko of Japan, the Duke & Duchess of Gloucester, and First Lady Imelda Marcos of the Philippines. King Birendra and Queen Aishwarya were killed with 10 other members of the Nepalese Royal family in 2001, by their eldest son, Crown Prince Dipendra. The Nepalese monarchy was abolished in 2008.
