British State Visit to Sweden, 1983

The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh were hosted by King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia on their State Visit to Sweden on this day in 1983, which was the Queen’s first State Visit since 1956, in response to the King’s 1975 State Visit.

The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh were welcomed by the Swedish Royal Family in a grand Official Welcome Ceremony in Stockholm on the first day, which was followed by a glittering State Banquet hosted by King Carl Gustaf (wearing the Order of the Garter and Royal Victorian Chain) and Queen Silvia (in the Braganza Tiara and the Order of the Seraphim) in honour of the Queen (wearing the Girls of Great Britain & Ireland Tiara and the Order of the Seraphim) and Duke (in the Order of the Seraphim) at the Royal Palace of Stockholm. Prince Bertil (wearing the Order of the Bath) and Princess Lilian (in the Baden Fringe Tiara) were also present.

The following day included a visit to a School, an Exhibition, and a Gala Performance attended by the  Queen (wearing the Ruby and Diamond Floral Bandeau Necklace), Duke, King Carl XVI Gustaf, and Queen Silvia.

After an equestrian event on the final day, the Queen (in the Modern Sapphire Tiara and George VI Sapphire Parure) and Duke hosted a Return Banquet in honour of King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia (wearing the Cameo Tiara) on the Royal Yacht Britannia.
