Three Queens in Mourning

Queen Elizabeth II was joined by the Queen Mother, Queen Mary, the Duke of Edinburgh, Princess Margaret, and the Duke of Gloucester as she received the Coffin of her father, King George VI, (topped by the Imperial State Crown) at King’s Cross Station in London on this day in 1952, coming from Sandringham for the ‘Lying-in-State at Westminster Hall ahead of the Funeral at St George’s Chapel. The Duke of Edinburgh and the Duke of Gloucester walked behind the coffin to the Lying-in-State at Westminster Hall, where the iconic photograph of the ‘Three Queens in Mourning’ was taken.
