Proclamation of Queen Margrethe II of Denmark (wearing her Wedding Earrings and Horseshoe Brooch with the Order of the Elephant and King Frederik IX’s Royal Family Order) on the balcony of Christiansborg Palace on this day in 1972. Then Prime Minister Jens Otto Krag faced three directions and proclaimed each time “King Frederik IX is dead. Long live Her Majesty Queen Margrethe II.” The crowd gave a nine hurrah salute, before Queen Margrethe delivered a short and emotional speech asking for God’s help in her new duties, and was joined by Prince Henrik, Crown Prince Frederik, and Prince Joachim on the Balcony.
