Royal Tiaras 2016

As part of our Year in review series, we take a look at the the Royal Tiaras of 2016. With the grand 70th Birthday celebrations of King Carl XVI Gustav to the guests at the Albanian Royal Wedding in October, this year has been filled with Royal Tiaras. Here we will look at the Tiaras from each country. This is by no means a comprehensive list, as we haven’t covered Japan or exiled royal families, but it includes events we have covered on this blog. Albania

Crown Princess Elia of Albania wore the Sapphire Goat Tiara for her Wedding to Crown Prince Leka in October and for a series of photos released before Albanian National Day in November.

Belgium

Queen Mathilde had five Tiara events this year in which she made full use of her limited collection. At the State Banquet during the German State Visit to Belgium, Queen Mathilde wore her Laurel Wreath Tiara, while her sister-in-law, Princess Astrid wore Queen Elisabeth’s Bandeau Tiara for the first time. In April, at the King Carl Gustav’s 70th Birthday celebrations, Queen Mathilde wore the Wolfers Necklace Tiara. In May, at the banquet during the Jordanian State Visit to Belgium, she wore the bandeau base of the The Nine Provinces Tiara. In October, on a State Visit to Japan, Queen Mathilde wore the Wolfers Necklace Tiara. Queen Mathilde wore the full version of the Nine Provinces Tiara during the Belgian State Visit to the Netherlands in November.

Britain

It was quite a low key Tiara year in Britain, with the Spanish State visit in March canceled and the Queen not making her outgoing summer State Visit. The first Tiara event was in May, at the State Opening Of Parliament. The Queen wore the Imperial State Crown while the Duchess of Cornwall wore the Greville Tiara. At the Wedding of Crown Prince Leka of Albania in October,Princess Michael of Kent wore the Kent Pearl Festoon Tiara. At the Colombian State Banquet in November, the Queen wore the Modern Sapphire Tiara, the Duchess of Cornwall wore the Greville Tiara, Princess Alexandra of Kent wore the Ogilvy tiara, and the Duchess of Gloucester wore the Iveagh tiara. Duchess of Gloucester wore the Gloucester Honeysuckle tiara at the Guildhall Banquet. In December, at the Diplomatic reception, the Queen repeated the Modern Sapphire Tiara, the Duchess of Cornwall wore the Greville Tiara for the third time this year, and the Duchess of Cambridge wore Queen Mary’s Lover’s Knot Tiara.

Denmark

The Danish Royal family had a nice tiara year, despite only hosting one State Visit. In January, at the New Year’s Court, Queen Margrethe wore the Pearl Poire Tiara, Crown Princess Mary wore the Danish Ruby Parure, and Princess Marie wore her Diamond Floral Tiara. At a gala dinner for art and culture in March, Queen Margrethe wore the Baden Palmette Tiara, Crown Princess Mary debuted a new Diamond, Ruby, and Spinel Necklace Tiara, and Princess Marie wore her Diamond Floral Tiara. At the Banquet during the Mexican State Visit in April, Queen Margrethe wore the Baden Palmette Tiara, Crown Princess Mary repeated her Necklace Tiara, and Princess Marie wore her Diamond Floral Tiara. In April, at the King Carl Gustav’s 70th Birthday celebrations, Queen Margrethe wore the Baden Palmette Tiara while Crown Princess Mary wore a gold hair piece. In November, in honour of her Copper Wedding Anniversary, pictures were released of Crown Princess Mary in the Danish Ruby Parure and her Necklace Tiara.

Luxembourg

In May, Grand Duchess Maria Theresa of Luxembourg wore the Diamond Vine Leaves Tiara during a State Visit to Finland. At the Luxembourg National Day Gala in June, the Grand Duchess wore the Belgian Scroll Tiara, Hereditary Grand Duchess Stephanie wore her Butterfly Tiara, Princess Tessy wore her Diamond Vines Leaves Tiara, Princess Claire wore the Grand Duchess Adelaide Tiara, and Princess Alexandra debuted the Chaumet Diamond Choker Tiara.

The Netherlands

In April, at the King Carl Gustav’s 70th Birthday celebrations, Princess Beatrix wore Württemberg Ornate Pearl Tiara. At the annual Gala Dinner for the Corps Diplomatique in May, Queen Maxima wore the Mellerio Ruby Tiara, Princess Beatrix wore Queen Emma’s Diamond Tiara, and Princess Margriet wore the Pearl Button Tiara. At the Banquet during the Dutch State Visit to New Zealand in November, Queen Maxima wore Queen Emma’s Diamond Tiara. During the Belgian State Visit to the Netherlands in November, Queen Maxima wore the Mellerio Ruby Tiara, Princess Beatrix wore the Dutch Diamond Bandeau, Princess Laurentien wore Queen Emma’s Diamond Tiara, and Princess Margriet wore the Pearl Button Tiara.

Norway

In January, before King Harald’s Silver Jubilee, the Norwegian royal court released a series of official portraits, including Queen Sonja in Empress Joséphine’s Emerald Tiara and Crown Princess Mette-Marit in both her Diamond Daisy Tiara and Amethyst Necklace Tiara. In March, at a Gala dinner for the diplomatic corps, Queen Sonja of Norway wore Queen Maud’s Pearl Tiara, Crown Princess Mette-Marit wore her Diamond Daisy Tiara, Princess Astrid wore her Turquoise Circlet Tiara. During a State visit to Italy in April, Queen Sonja wore the smaller version of Queen Maud’s Pearl Tiara, and wore the full version during the Norwegian State Visit to Finland in September. Queen Sonja wore her Modern Gold Parure at the banquet for the Singapore State Visit to Norway, when Crown Princess Mette-Marit wore her Amethyst Necklace Tiara, and Princess Astrid wore the Vasa Tiara. At a Gala dinner for members of the Norwegian Parliament in October, Queen Sonja wore Queen Maud’s Pearl Tiara again, Crown Princess Mette-Marit wore her Diamond Daisy Tiara, Princess Astrid wore her Turquoise Circlet Tiara

Romania

In April, at the King Carl Gustav’s 70th Birthday celebrations, Crown Princess Margarita wore the Romanian Greek Key Tiara. She also wore the Tiara again at the Wedding of Crown Prince Leka of Albania in October.

Sweden

In February, at a representation Dinner at the Royal Palace of Stockholm, Queen Silvia wore the Connaught Tiara, Crown Princess Victoria wore the Baden Fringe Tiara, and Princess Sofia wore her Emerald and Diamond Tiara. Also in February, Princess Madeleine wore the Swedish Aquamarine Kokoshnik Tiara at a fairy tale party for children with serious illnesses. In April, the Swedes hosted the world’s royalty at King Carl Gustav’s 70th Birthday celebrations, at which Queen Silvia wore the Connaught Tiara, Crown Princess Victoria wore the Boucheron Laurel Wreath Tiara, and Princess Madeleine wore her Modern Fringe Tiara. In May, during the Chilean State Visit to Sweden, Queen Silvia wore Queen Sofia’s Tiara. On the Swedish State Visit to Germany, Queen Silvia wore the Connaught Tiara on Day 1, and the Baden Fringe Tiara on Day 2. At the Nobel Prize Banquet in December, Queen Silvia wore the Leuchtenberg Sapphire Parure, Crown Princess Victoria wore the Cut Steel Tiara, Princess Sofia wore the Cut Steel Bandeau, and Princess Madeleine wore the Connaught Tiara. At the King’s Dinner for Nobel Laureates the next evening, Queen Silvia wore the Nine Prong Tiara, Crown Princess Victoria wore Princess Lilian’s Laurel Wreath Tiara, Princess Sofia wore the Four Button tiara, and Princess Madeleine wore the Modern Fringe Tiara, and the Connaught Tiara as a necklace.screen-shot-2016-12-19-at-4-22-47-pm
