Ahead of the upcoming  Sotheby’s Fine Jewels sale on London on December 13, we take a look at jewels with Royal provenance or purpose. Among the lots we have included are; a Diamond Tiara belonging to the Queen Mother’s cousin, a coral parure, sapphire and diamond rings, and a Cartier dress set once owned by a Russian Princess.

Diamond Tiara

Estimate:  $12,000 – $18,000

Property of Hilda Constance Helen Blackburn (1920-1986), granddaughter of Claude Bowes-Lyon, 13th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne

A Diamond tiara from the late 19th century, composed of floral and garland motif, set with cushion-shaped and rose diamonds, the three central flowers can be detached and worn as brooches. The tiara belonged to Hilda Constance Helen Blackburn, a granddaughter of the 13th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne, and a cousin of Queen Elisabeth, the Queen Mother.

Coral Parure

Estimate: $5,000-$6,000

A tiara, necklace, two pairs of earrings; a brooch; and a pair of hair ornaments, composed of coral carved into foliate, floral and fruit motifs. from the mid 19th century.

A ring set with a cushion-shaped sapphire, the shoulders set with baguette diamonds and a ring set with an oval sapphire, the shoulders set with single-cut and baguette diamonds. Formerly in the collection of Countess Majola Maria Castenuovo Di Torazzo

Gem set dress set, Cartier, 1940s

Estimate:  $3,000-$6,000

Formerly in the collection of Princess Thérésa Vatchnadzé, née Beglarian

A pair of cufflinks engraved with star motifs, set with cabochon rubies, emeralds and sapphires, and three buttons, signed Cartier, 1940s. Born in 1894, Princess Thérésa Vatchnadzé lived the privileged life of pre-revolutionary Russia until 1917, when she managed to escape with her son, Iva, while her husband, Adamoff, a brilliant jurist was apprehended by the Communists and never seen again. She eventually married Prince Irakli Vatchnadze, a dear friend, after years of searching for her husband. They lived in Paris, where the Princess became a successful fashion designer, until WWII, after which she and the Prince lived quietly in exile. Among her notable clientele was King Faisal I of Iraq, who is rumored to have given her this dress set as well as a diamond ring auctioned in 2010.
