Happy Birthday to Princess Caroline of Monaco and Hanover, who turns 66 today! The elder sister of Prince Albert II and only beneficiary of her grandmother, Princess Charlotte, and mother, Princess Grace, who is also the estranged Consort of the Head of the illustrious House of Hanover, Princess Caroline has a magnificent jewellery collection, which includes this Sapphire Necklace Tiara!

The necklace is composed of seven large sapphires set in individual square diamond frames, joined by elements made of baguette diamonds, with the deign quite typical of the style of the 1970s or 1980s, though the maker is unknown as is who acquired the piece.

While not as often worn as her Cartier Sapphire and Diamond Suite, this Sapphire Necklace appeared quite regularly on Princess Caroline for a series of Galas and Portraits in the 1980s, including a notable Red Cross Ball in 1987, and through the 1990s and the 2000s.
Another notable appearance came in 2006, the Princess Caroline wore the Sapphire Necklace with her Cartier Sapphire Earrings for the Wedding of Prince Philipp of Hesse and Laetitia Bechtolf at Gut Panker.
Around the time of the Wedding of Princess Caroline’s brother, Prince Albert II of Monaco, in 2011, the Cartier Pearl Drop Tiara and Princess Grace’s Tiaras were in a travelling exhibit, so Princess Caroline decided to covert her Sapphire and Diamond Necklace into a Tiara for the Wedding Ball of Prince Albert II and Princess Charlene of Monaco on the Terraces of the Opéra de Monte-Carlo. The piece does not seem to have been worn publicly since then, neither as a necklace nor as a tiara, so lets hope for reappearance sometime soon.
