Happy Birthday to Flora Fraser, 21st Lady Saltoun, who turns 90 today! The daughter of the 20th Lord Saltoun and Dorothy Welby, she became the heiress presumptive to the Lordship, the lowest rank in the Peerage of Scotland, after the death of her brother during the Second World War. In 1956, the Mistress of Saltoun, the traditional style of Heirs to Scottish Titles, married Alexander Ramsay of Mar, the only son of Princess Patricia of Connaught and Sir Alexander Ramsay. The couple had three daughters, including the current Mistress of Saltoun and remained married until his death in 2000. The family lived at Cairnbulg Castle, the family seat, for a period, as well as on the Mar Lodge Estate, which Alexander Ramsay inherited from his aunt, the Duchess of Fife, before much of it was sold. Considered members of the extended British Royal Family, and also closely related to the Swedish, Danish and Greek Royal Families, the couple attended a variety of royal events, including the Wedding of Queen Margrethe of Denmark in 1967, the Wedding of Princess Benedikte of Denmark and Prince Richard of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg in 1968, and the Wedding of Prince William in 2011. In 1979, she succeeded her father as the 21st Lady Saltoun and Chief of Clan Fraser, also gaining a seat in the House of Lords which she retained as one of the ninety hereditary peers who were elected to remain in the House after 1999, the only holder of a Lordship in parliament until her retirement in 2014. Lady Saltoun now resides at Inverey House, near Braemar, and has published a few books on Clan Fraser. We wish her a very happy Birthday and Many Happy Returns!

  1. I remember seeing her at the Cambridge wedding, an Sunday wondering who she was. Isn’t it interesting how the various royal families keep rather distant – to my eyes – relations close? Thanks for the photos.
