Princess of Asturias Awards 2020

King Felipe and Queen Letizia of Spain were joined by the Princess of Asturias and Infanta Sofia in Oviedo this week to preside over the 2020 Princess of Asturias Awards, to deliver a series of prizes to individuals, entities or companies from around the world who make notable achievements in the sciences, humanities, and public affairs. Established in 1980, the Princess of Asturias Foundation is a private non-profit institution, whose objectives are to contribute to the exaltation and promotion of how many scientific, cultural and humanistic values ​​are universal heritage and consolidate their links to the Principality of Asturias. This was the first year the Princess has attended.

After arriving in Oviedo on the afternoon of October 15th, King Felipe, Queen Letizia, the Princess of Asturias, and Infanta Sofia visited the facilities of the La Vega Arms Factory, where they attended a virtual round table with the recipients of the 2020 Princess of Asturias Award for Scientific and Technical Research, alongside a variety of cultural activities.

The following morning, King Felipe, Queen Letizia, the Princess of Asturias, and Infanta Sofia received the winners of the 2020 Princess of Asturias Awards in the Convadonga Hall of the Reconquista Hotel.

In the afternoon, King Felipe and Queen Letizia were joined by Queen Sofia, the Princess of Asturias, and Infanta Sofia for the 2020 Princess of Asturias Awards Ceremony at the Teatro Campoamor in Oviedo, where the Princess of Asturias presented the prizes and gave a speech to award the scientific, technical, cultural, social and humanitarian work carried out by people, institutions, groups of people or institutions in the international field, they are awarded in eight categories: Arts, Letters, Social Sciences, Communication and Humanities, Scientific Research and Technique, International Cooperation, Concord and Sports.

The Awards went to:

  • Spanish toilets on the front line against COVID-19, Princess of Asturias Award for Concord.
  • Ennio Morricone and John Williams, Princess of Asturias Award for the Arts.
  • Guadalajara International Book Fair and Hay Festival of Literature & Arts, Princess of Asturias Award for Communication and Humanities.
  • Dani Rodrik, Princess of Asturias Award for Social Sciences.
  • Carlos Sainz Cenamor, Princess of Asturias Award for Sports.
  • Anne Carson, Princess of Asturias Award for Literature.
  • Yves Meyer, Ingrid Daubechies, Terence Tao and Emmanuel Candès, Princess of Asturias Award for Technical and Scientific Research.
  • Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, Princess of Asturias Award for International Cooperation.
