Today marks the Centenary of the Death of Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna, the Grand Duchess Vladimir, who died on this day in 1920. Born Duchess Marie of Mecklenburg-Schwerin in 1854, she was the daughter of Grand Duke Frederick Francis II of Mecklenburg-Schwerin and Princess Augusta Reuss of Köstritz. In 1874, she married Grand Duke Vladimir Alexandrovich, the third son of Alexander II of Russia, getting the new Russian name of Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna. The couple had four sons and one daughter, Grand Duchess Elena Vladimirovna, and mainly resided at the magnificent Vladimir Palace in St. Petersburg, becoming the most prominent Society Hostess, often a rival with the Imperial Court. The Grand Duchess Vladimir was the last member of the Romanov Family to escape Russia, travelling to the Caucasus in her own train in 1917, and remaining in Russia, hoping to install her son, Grand Duke Kirill Vladimirovich as the Tsar, until February 1920, when she finally fled to Venice, from there to Switzerland and then to France, where the Grand Duchess passed away, surrounded by her family, at her Villa in September.

  1. The Grand Duchess Vladimir was a very handsome woman. She had a lot of poise which you can see even through the fading sepia photos. It looks like she was also very proud and competed with the Tsarina in everything, including the children. No doubt she was extremely proud to be the mother of four healthy boys. I can only imagine the Tsarina’s distress where the Grand Duchess was concerned. The end of the Romanovs, including the Grand Duchess, was very sad and terrible. Maybe if they had curbed their haughtiness it would not have been so bad.

  2. Can I just say what a relief to find a person that genuinely knows what they’re talking about on the web.
You actually know how to bring an issue to light and make it
important. More people really need to look at this and understand this side of
the story. I was surprised you aren’t more popular since you certainly have the gift.

  3. You really make it seem so easy with your presentation but I find this topic
to be actually something that I think I would never understand.
It seems too complex and extremely broad for me. I am looking forward for your next post, I will try to get the hang of it!
