Captain Cook Bicentenary Tour, 1970

The Queen, Prince Philip, the Prince of Wales and Princess Anne were in the midst of an extensive tour of the South Pacific 50 years ago, visiting Fiji, Tonga, New Zealand, and Australia to mark the bi-centenary of Captain James Cook’s maiden voyage to Australia in 1770. The Tour lasted from the 2nd of March to the 5th of May, with the Australian leg beginning on this day in 1970.

After short visits to Fiji and Tonga, the Queen, Prince Philip, the Prince of Wales and Princess Anne toured around New Zealand for three weeks in March before spending the entire month of April in Australia, the highlight of which was sailing up the east coast of Australia on the Royal Yacht Britannia.

Some highlights from New Zealand, including a State Opening of Parliament, with a series of Galas and Receptions, for which the Queen wore her Girls of Great Britain & Ireland Tiara, the Vladimir Tiara, and Queen Alexandra’s Kokoshnik Tiara. Princess Anne wore the Halo Scroll Tiara and Princess Andrew’s Meander Tiara:
