Funeral of Countess Mountbatten, 1960

The Funeral of Edwina, Countess Mountbatten of Burma at sea off the coast of Portsmouth from HMS Wakeful on this day in 1960, following a service at Romsey Abbey officiated by the Archbishop of Canterbury. The Burial at Sea, in accordance with her wishes, led the Queen Mother to remark “Oh Edwina, she always liked to make a splash!” Royal relatives at the funeral included the Duke of Edinburgh (nephew) and Princess Andrew of Greece (sister-in-law). Indian Prime Minister Nehru, a former lover, had the Indian Navy frigate INS Trishul escort the Wakeful and cast a wreath. The Funeral was followed by a memorial service at Westminster Abbey in March, which was also attended by the Queen Mother and Princess Margaret.
